Old nest learns new trick!

At the request of a special customer, I created the Andie necklace featuring a new look with a very old feel. Using my quintessential nest pendant/charm atop the silver discs, I layered two cupped, hand stamped circles atop each other. The discs were first stamped with a mixed font for the children's names, then I naturally oxidized them and hammer cupped them for a very "nest" feel. the nest atop finishes the rustic look...the piece looks worn, rugged and very earthy while being a fresh, modern way to display a mothers necklace.

What's in a name...of a metal?

What's YOUR metal? You know, there's that color (whether or not the real thing) you gravitate towards. Mine, well, it's mostly been silver, it was gold years ago, and I'm being pulled back into the gold realm as of yet. Actually, I'm toying a bit with mixing metals...yes, seemed like a dirty word years ago - mixed. Although it makes sense, if your wedding ring is one metal and your favorite jewels are bound in another. Go ahead, then mix them!

Fortunately, I recently purchased (yes, believe it or not a jewelry designer buys other jewels than just my own!) a gold coin ring encased in sterling silver. I adore it! I wear it with almost anything and everything. Then, my platinum wedding ring and white gold and sterling treasures all mesh beautifully. Plus, when I feel in the mood for gold, then it's all tied together once again.

In response to the acceptance and joy over mixed metals, I'm using more brass and copper in my designs. Plus, with the ever-increasing silver market (about double what it was a year ago per ounce!), it makes sense to reach beyond the old standby. I was recently asked if I created a current brass design in silver. I hadn't yet created it in silver, but with the flip of a switch (so to speak!), I turned the brass photo into oxidized silver (switching it from color to black & white).

To Be or Not To Be...

I always wonder how I got to where I am, how others got to where they are and what it all means about me or those other people. Sometimes circumstances weigh more heavily than a true decision. Sometimes absolute freedom means decision-making solely on gut, instinct and preference.

Five years ago, I would have never imagined E. Ria as it is today. I'm blessed, fortunate, and beyond luck, pleased as pie that what I envisioned is unveiling itself to me and my following.

With satisfaction from accomplishing a creative goal (those usually turn out differently than first imagined!), I seek new growth. I want new experiences, learn new skills and bring a fresh product to customers continually.

One element of my designs that has taken shape over the past few months is the extension of non-customized items available on Etsy.com. I rolled this idea around for a few weeks before going "live" and here it is...

Sometimes I wonder if my jewelry was food, what would it taste like? It's evident from this photo that juicy fruit is about all I could think of when arranging these necklaces! This set of necklaces was made for a bride and her bridal party. Two stones - one chalcedony, one carnelian...and all in gold. Oooh yummy! Enjoy!

...I work, work, work and wonder where all the energy came from!
...I work outside, marveling in the splendor of nature and how fortunate I have come into my work - my passion, my bliss
...I work all day and the work still isn't done - this may pertain more to my home than my profession, but here it's all the same - all work must get done - make hay while the sun shines!
...All days I acknolwedge how blessed I am to have crafted my profession to the ideal situation for me, my family and my customers. God bless the Internet - yes, really. For without it, I wouldn't be where I am today, in so many ways!

Wouldn't it be nice?

Do you ever walk through the aisles of a discount store or grocery store and see a product you always buy, need to buy and can't really get along without and think, "Wouldn't it be great if..."? Maybe you don't. I DO! I'll see a product, know it's on my list or I'm out of it and relinquish "buying power" to the "needing power" of purchasing.

Yes, the old adage "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" holds true. If you continually buy something you want changed, and never make a fuss about it, then the company will likely continue making the item the same way...again and again. I DO!

If customers continually buy a design, yet never comment how they would like it be a little more this or a little more that, then I never know of their desires.

I'll never forget a junior high school class project that enlisted each student to write a letter to a company asking for a particular product in their line to be changed. I have no idea what I wrote about (surprising!), but my best friend wrote to the "wax paper" company that had featured the same, frizzy-haired, plaid-shirt-wearing "housewife" on their package for YEARS! Or, it seemed like years to us of a whole 13 years old!

You won't believe it...within a few months, the package changed! I'll never forget it. Who knows if my friend's comments made a difference, but at least she was heard.

So where is this leading? Well, yesterday while shopping at my local food cooperative (a little different from a grocery store in how it functions, but a grocery store nonetheless...a very progressive grocery store).

I didn't really need laundry detergent, but there on the shelf, in amongst white, sparkling bright jugs was this quaint, almost camouflaged brown carton with a plastic lid. Hmm, what could this be? It is certainly intriguing! I picked it up and knew right away. It was a cardboard packaged carton of laundry detergent! Inside is evidently a plastic liner - the same plastic as grocery bags, so it can be recycled along w/ bags you recycle at the entrance of stores (Lowe's, etc.).

I wanted to jump for joy in the aisles! (I'm sure THAT would have been a selling point to feast your eyes on.) I have always said to myself when I lug up a jug of detergent to my cart, "Why can't they make these things out of less?" Well, Seventh Generation has done it! Woo, hoo...yippy skippy...however it goes, I'm thrilled. I only wish more companies could follow suit. We'll see. The times they are a changin'.

Ten years ago, I would have never guessed I would be as conscious of my plastic purchases as I am now. I think about ALL my purchases now. No, I don't think it's chic, earthy or cool. I just think, and have been thinking this more and more since No. 1 and No. 2 were born that we have too much, use too much, want too much, throw too much. If you acquire too much of the good stuff, then share it. And when you acquire, take the old adage to heart - "quality over quantity".

You may be asking, how does someone like yourself, who is constantly in the "create" mode deal with this dilemma. It's very simple. Be aware of WHAT you're buying, how MUCH you're buying and where it could go once you are not using it anymore. That's a lot to digest with a simple purchase, but today I even lamented at a magazine purchase...wondering if somewhere someone had purchased the same issue, read it and dropped it onto another pile of magazines, never to be read again.

Think about it...hopefully act on it...be aware.

What 8-hour day?

If I had to stick to a traditional workday, I might not get anything else accomplished. Kids would not be where they need to be, packages would not be mailed as efficiently and this blog, well, it may not exist. Or, who knows, maybe life would seem "in balance" then, but I never felt in balance when I DID work an 8-hour, straight-through workday.

My workdays now seem so fulfilling. Work where I need to, rest when I need to, fill in the gaps as they come. Laptops and smart phones make the life I lead easier. I'll never forget my enthusiasm when I hopped on my husband's web-enabled phone (very primitive capabilities at the time) to see my online store! Wow, if I could have access 24/7, just think what I could do! Well, it's only been uphill from there. I don't see any reason why an online presence would peak...unless time or other responsibilities would keep away from being "plugged in" at any and all hour of the day.

There, too, exists a problem - TOO much connectivity. It's easy, terribly easy to blur the line of work and family when at the click of an on button, you are there, online, connected. I have been better at leaving messages until the next morning...they can wait. I have been better at NOT letting worries creep into my consciousness right before bed...makes for a late night and not-so-great dreams.

Even with all the availability of connectivity, I still cherish my time anonymous. Time outside that can be spent with nothing but No. 1 and No. 2, the blue sky and the road ahead. My husband's profession keeps him in the here and now much more than mine, but then his down-time has him revved up with screen time and connectivity. Opposites do attract and we create the perfect yin and yang!

All hail connectivity...all hail anonymity.

What's in store for YOU today?! You know, "Today is..."

How would your day go if every morning you saw this phrase on your bathroom vanity mirror? I'm asking this becuase I'm actually considering posting this photo above my bathroom vanity mirror! You have probably seen catchy phrases, to-do lists, memos to yourself, love notes, etc. on your bathroom mirror (or for you tidy ones, maybe not!). Well, I hardly put anything on my bathroom mirror anymore, except the occasional splatter of toothpaste from my Sonicare toothbrush rotating at 100 mph. Sorry, TMI.

Anyway, I'm thinking of cluttering up my mirror with this photo. I think it will give me pause each morning, as I'm wrangling with No. 1 and No. 2, to take a deep breath... To think about how wonderful each start to the day is for me... To give thanks to God for my health to wake-up with energy, drive and ambition for the day. Now I realize not every day goes smoothly, as planned or ends with all my "to-dos" done. Then if my "to-dos" were all done, what would I do tomorrow?

I hope forever for more "to-dos", more "what ifs?" and more energy than I could ever use in a day. I'm grateful that today IS the first day of the rest of my life! What will you do with your day?

Is it time for tea yet?

For those of you who may actually work from your home, too, you can appreciate my predicament. To get ANYWHERE from my office/studio, I MUST walk through my kitchen. And, unfortunately, I know where everything in the kitchen is at any given time, including chocolate, cookies, ice cream and any other yummy containing sugar. Yes, sugar is my drug of choice - one that over the last year I've been feverishly trying to give up. (It's really, really not good for you, don't you know?!)

So, I have found a new friend, or better yet, become better acquainted with an old friend. TEA. I adore tea. Now, I must begin my mornings with my hot dark friend, coffee, but around 10 a.m., it's time for tea...and 1 p.m., 3 p.m., even 5 p.m. if I need an evening pick-me-up. What kind of tea you ask? Mostly green - heavy-duty double matcha tea. (What's that?!)

Double matcha tea is the stout, foggy stuff that packs the most punch as far as antioxidants per cup. It is supposedly what the Japanese drink religiously. I don't know how far that "fact" will go, but I read it in several health publications. Anyway, it's great as is or as I've been enjoying lately - doused with a dose of white tea (preferably Berryblossom White from Tazo - see my crazy photo above:)

Oh, tea. I could drink you all day and never feel guilty...and I do. Oh, to my earthly delight! I've heard you can drink too much coffee, but never too much tea.

I never really appreciated how much Asian countries include tea as a staple part of their beverage repertoire, or really the foundation of it, until my husband and I traveled to Taipei, Taiwan. On the trip over (that was a 14 hour adventure in one seated position!), instead of serving coffee or soda, "hot tea? hot tea? hot tea?" was heard all around the cabin every hour or so. Maybe Americans will indulge in the lovely green stuff more often someday...then again, unlikely. I know I'm hooked and miss a day when I miss my spot of tea!

Give it a try and when the kitchen calls from your office, you can meet up with tea instead of a tub of Ben & Jerry's!

What I Learned at KC

(O.k., so this photo has nothing to do with my post, but it's pure enjoyment to see such beauty! Shiny gold, cranberry, sparkly just everywhere...enjoy the view! By the way, someone already owns this piece, but I still cherish the photos.)

So to sum up my previous post a few days ago, I want to touch upon what I learned from the big bad world of "market". If you're not in the retail world, "market" is where stores, shops, retailers, web store owners go to order/purchase merchandise for their businesses. For me, it was where I was bound and determined to "make it big" with my candle business.

I had been selling wholesale to local/regional businesses for the past year or so and it had been going well. Demand was high, the economy was spectacular, and soy candles were HOT - not just literally, but figuratively, too!

I thought I would give a market a shot. The closest one was Kansas City. So, I delved into the web site, signed up and was accepted. I thought there was something magical about getting accepted, and maybe there was, but once I arrived, I had my doubts!

There were other soy candle manufacturers there, too. I knew most of them, at least on the surface. I knew immediately I was as green as fresh picked peas from the garden. Oh, was I in trouble.

Then, again, I had a beatiful display - black with the pop of color from my candles. A few hundred dollars later, I had gorgeous pastel roses adorning my candles...and it ended up I didn't even make enough from the venture to pay for the silly roses!

In the end, I learned so many valuable lessons that I still carry with me today...soak these up so you won't need to learn them for yourself:

*Almost always, once you have a good product, it's no longer WHAT you're selling but HOW you're selling it. (Sell the sizzle, not the hot dog.)

*Buyers usually want top-notch at rock bottom prices...no matter how "high end" it looks

*Be aggressive, VERY aggressive...once you get your foot in the door it's harder to get pushed out

*Don't expect to make sales just because you're entering a potentially hot venue - (aka - don't prebuy merchandise/inputs until the sale is made!)

*Just because others found success selling a certain way does not mean I will.

*Wholesale equals 50% less profit per unit - you had better be selling a lot to make up for that gap.

*Even if your product doesn't sell well on the wholesale level doesn't mean it's not a good product, it's just not the right item at the right place sold to the right person at the right price. Many variables must be factored in for a sale.

*The mean lady selling dips at the end of the row, with her child in tow, is not really mean or snotty...she's actually really sweet, very informative and shares a wealth of information if you just ask!

*Keep your head up! Retail isn't so bad!

Not just out of the box - against the grain!

If you have been around my home in the past year, you would know that I have gone ORGANIC! Don't panic, I'm organic... (my local food cooperative "organic grocery store" had a magnet w/ this phrase on it) This has been quite a transition for me...it came quite abruptly last year (I'll delve into that later). Five years ago, I would have laughed and even scoffed at the idea of eating mostly organic. I have always thought myself "convnetional" because that's just who I was - vanilla ice cream (with maybe some pretty pastel sprinkles!)

To top off this move to a new way of eating...I am a farmer's wife (sorry, not a true farm wife) and a farmer's daughter. Conventional nonetheless! So, not only shopping but joining the local food cooperative was beyond out of the box for my family - it was against the grain. I'm holding strong though, learning how to buy organic even at the conventional grocery stores. Now that spring is here, I'm excited to be growing my OWN organic foods. Last year was hard on my crop - too much rain too often. Maybe container veggie gardening will fit this bill this year!

So how does this relate to my design you ask? Well, knowing I'm organic will lead to understand why I strive to procure only, as much as possible, American manufactured metals, materials and tools. So far I'm able to achieve that with the help of a few of my fabulous suppliers. Then again, it's difficult to find Chinese turquoise in the states - lol! So, for those few specific stones, etc., I default to their country of origin. Rest assured though that about 90% of what you see online is of American origin...makes me feel good. I hope it makes you feel good, too:)

To take thoughtful input purchasing a step further, I'm working on a line of recycled silver jewelry. These pieces will allow even greater flexibility with design, which is the best part of this endeavor for me! Keep your eye out for it...

Who is E. Ria?

So, who IS E. Ria??? (I'm still trying to answer that question myself!). You may not care...it may take up too much of your day, but I thought I'd leave this mark on this journey as an acknowledgment of where I have been, how I got here and where I plan to go on MY JOURNEY. I'm a creative woman and I can't be without being that.

I remember working at a "real job"...you know, the kind where you show up at 8 a.m. everyday, can't wait for Fridays, and travel wherever they tell you because "that's your job...". Some of my co-workers, my senior by a good 20 years at the time, would talk about "in my former life..." as if they had been reincarnated from some animal being on another continent. I silently scoffed at these remarks thinking to myself, "How old ARE you to actually refer to another job you once held as 'another life'?"

I sheepishly now understand.

While it has only been seven years since that "real job", I feel I'm miles away from who I was then. I was good at whom I was then, but it wasn't MY PATH. It could have been my path, had it not been for the Internet. (A sweeping statement, yes, but the truth absolute.)

Two major shifts in my growth paradigm were 1) getting married and 2) staring an online business. One came in like a sweeping thunderstorm, loudly, voraciously and with much anticipation. {my blissful marriage to my husband} The other came on like a fog, slowly, creeping ever closer and closer until I realized I was in the middle of it. Both are at the heart of my life now, and I couldn't be happier.

I'll forgo the formative first 24 years, as those didn't seem so much to be in my control as I had hoped...or at least long for now. Let's begin with 2004...the year of my blissful marriage AND my start of FREEDOM! Yes, I was "free" before 2004, but my career freedom started abruptly just months after I was married. The position I had been working in had been changed and eliminated from the company I was working for in 2004. This was probably the most profound and happiest days of my life. Really.

Most that have lost a job, one that is a full-time career position, are devastated to find out their payday from that employer may be the last. Days like these USUALLY don't come at a good time for anyone. I had to be the .001% anomaly who had a spring in my step (Yes, I really think I walked a little lighter walking out the door that day!)

(Pre-PS...I just informed my husband of the synonym function on Word "highlight a word, then do a right click, scroll down to {synonym}"...he says he'll try to use it from now on. If you knew him, you'd laugh at his sarcasm.)

At the time, my husband was still running his business about 100 miles away that took him away in the springs and falls. We agreed to keep the business going since we didn't have children at the time and it paid greatly for the amount of days (no, not time - there was a lot of that committed!) to put in yearly. Anyway, he was working in an area that had terrible cell phone reception. So, for nearly 48 hours, my new husband didn't know I didn't have a job. Actually, I was granted use of my old office and to stick around until the end of the fiscal year when the position was truly "out of the budget". {"Are you kidding me?" I asked myself...stick around? I had better things to do...}

So, I boxed up my company cell phone. No, I didn't want to drive it an hour to turn it in and walk through the entire bevy of former co-workers. What would I say? The postal service could return that phone for me, and it did:)

The next few days were filled with questions, little answers, but a nagging idea that I could actually make my hobby/part-time business a full-time viable venture. I had started a soy candle business with my mother and friend two years earlier. We worked together when we could find the time. I feverishly churned out gorgeous (yes, they were gorgeous...none of the Mason jar/tin cup looking candles soy are so infamous for boasting) while my husband was away after I returned home from a long day at work.
It never seemed feasible for my mother, who while stirring dye into ONE candle a time said, "This could NEVER make anyone a living." Little did she know that her daughter would be making the attempt to do so only a few months later!

I soon got to work finding ANY locale at which I could sell my candles…farmers markets, gift shops, craft shows and Ebay. Oh, yes, Ebay. That turned out to be a huge revenue generator AND expense generator! My time on Ebay proved that everyone wants something for nothing and most people don’t care where they get their goods, as long as they get them. At the time, it all set fine with me, but these days, I’ve changed my tune to quantity over quality. There has to be a limit on over-exuberant consumption. That comment may seem like an oxymoron from a retailer, but it’s true (in my blue eyes). I had a gut instinct when the recession hit that it was the best thing that could have happened for our society, our environment and the future.

Sorry, back on track with MY track. I was everywhere with my candles. I was sending out solicitation letters to shops for wholesale orders (some even panned out!). I was looking into any venue where vendors would be setting up to be included in the mix. I was reading, discovering, working, working, and working. I can’t say I was working smart, but I was working, and that had to be worth something.

There were many days that changed the course of that first real business for me. One such series of days were in 2007 at the Kansas City Gift Mart. More on that to come…

Nesting Instincts

Before I had children, I had a hard time getting excited for little ones...until my (first) nieces were born (both in the same year). They were such little bundles of cuteness! The pinnacle of baby love was when my first, No. 1, arrived. I was so overjoyed, I couldn't believe no one told me how great this was going to be...being a parent and all! Well, hello, they had, but I hadn't listened...or at least, not very well. It takes that special moment of becoming a mother to accurately define motherhood.

So my love affair with 'feathering the nest' has not subsided. (Thank goodness!) And my move affair with nests as jewelry will probably never subside. My bricks and mortar even flaunted the name, "The Nest Boutique." (Oh when will those lovies return?! Oh, I wish I knew...)

Where do ideas come from?

So we all may have a different answer for this question. Admittedly, my ideas usually come from the most unexpected places. I'll se a restaurant menu sign, or a street sign, maybe an old book cover, sometimes a scrapbook page (from someone else - I don't scrapbook!)... old tins, canisters or maybe label from some tea or chocolate. I never know, and that's what makes it so exciting having new ideas creep into my creative brain! If I knew where to "get them" or "find them", they wouldn't be so much fun collecting. I'm up for anything, anytime, anywhere. I know many ideas have sprouted on Sundays sitting in the pew at church. I know, terrible, huh? Well, God must be speaking to me:) I have new ideas no longer "up my sleeve" but actually available to YOU! See them here:

Have you ever sat at home, hoping someone might stop by or you'll think of something fun to do? Well, it may not happen! You need to get out, see new things, meet new people and change up your routine. The same can be said, in a different context, about the Internet. You can exist unto yourself (your web site) or you can venture out, introduce yourself to new people, new places (web sites) and establish yourself (your domain) as something MORE than just your web address.

I'm in the process of doing "this" with E. Ria Designs. Etsy (customers) have been very good to me...my business and my success. Yet sitting still doesn't allow you to grow, experience all you possibly can and ultimately, reach new customers.

So....it's off to the races! Or, better yet on the Internet, Facebook, Twitter and beyond. So, in the coming weeks, be ready to see an even greater presence of E. Ria Designs on the Internet. Family necklaces seem to be the favorite overall design I create. So, in that spirit, I decided to dig deep in my creative hat and pull out the SYLVIA! The surface is heat oxidized and brushed for a charcoal (color) enhanced patina. The subtle contrast is gorgeous yet casual. Two discs feature children's names (more can be added, of course!), an oval displays the family name and year established and the largest disc features an ampersand and the parent's initials. You can mix up the stamping as you like! Enjoy!

Deadlines quickly approaching!

As with any cutoff date, the date can actually be somewhat flexible and arbitrary if made too soon. Thus, I have not established a cutoff date for orders to be delivered in time for Christmas. Nonetheless, don't wait until the cutoff date to order! With sales tripling daily in November, my cutoff date may hover around Dec. 1 as it did last year. That's only two weeks away! What I plan to do for last minute shoppers is switch my shipping method to priority mail, versus first-class, and coincidentally raise the price of shipment across the board to accomodate the increased method costs. Blah, blah, blah...I know, boring, but necessary for business!

I've been itching at this issue for a few years now and this year, well, I'm going to put my money where my mouth is! Why don't you, too?! For too long I and many others have heard the ills of "imported" goods...what they contain, their poor quality and the imbalance of trade it causes in America.

I suppose now is as good a time as any to promote American manufactured goods! As an American jewelry artisan, I feel strongly in the capabilities and opportunities provided by Americans. I strive to purchase only, as much as possible, American made tools and materials.

Just in time for the fall wardrobe change, this rustic inspired scroll frame bracelet is all brass, featuring an EXCLUSIVE E. Ria Designs shape! I hand drew this design, then had a fabricator create pieces in brass and copper...two sizes! This size shown on the bracelet is the smaller, 1" wide (tall for the bracelet), brass design. I stamp into the surface, brush it and then naturally oxidize and polish it for a beautiful patina. The bracelet/chain is vintage new stock brass double-link cable chain that is also naturally oxidized and closes with a vintage new stock brass lobster clasp. It's a beauty that isn't too heavy, but still substantial! Enjoy...

Using my new EXCLUSIVE scroll frame design, I created this bracelet with the spirit of an ID bracelet and the thickness of a luxurious charm bracelet (add charms to this!). The frame is stamped and oxidized naturally. The chain is a double-link rolo chain in solid brass. I have oxidized it to take away the "brassy yellow" and leave a rich, deep, multi-tone vintage brass look. ALL my design stamps and fonts will work on this bracelet, so get creative or get in touch with me for a personalized design we can create together!

It's finally here!!! I hand drew this adorable little scroll antiqued style frame, had a fabricator cut it from solid brass and copper and have four styles to choose from! There is the larger, 1 1/4" long (copper & brass) and the 1" long (copper & brass) frames. These can be used as nice focal point pendants, double-layered pendants (contrasting copper and brass or just two textures of the same metal). Because of the larger surface area, all my fonts are available for use on this design. I should have several more designs using this piece here soon...CHECK BACK!

Here is a "family" of family necklaces all in the same spirit - bold, beautiful and shiny! Each is 1 1/4" wide (if you think that is small, it isn't!)...find a jar or bottle and measure the lid...you'll see this necklace is significant! Around the edges you can have stamped whatever you like...children, pets, grandchildren...your favorite words! It doesn't have to be an honest to goodness family to be a family for these necklaces. In the middle, have stamped a letter, two letters, a design or even a number or symbol. Then, adorn the entire piece with a pearl of your choice...so many choices, so little time! Or, upgrade with a genuine chalcedony or quartz briolette...enjoy!

I know, the fine print is no fun! When you buy a car, open a new electronic, sign a lease or whatever, there's fine print. Well, so is true when purchasing from my shop. A world without fine print would be great, but we have it for a reason - to make everything clear between two parties;) Sooooooooooo.......when I ask you to read the policies, I mean it! I have important information in there for you, for me and for the good of the transaction. I WANT you to be 100% satisfied and not have any surprises. So, too, I want to have a smooth production of your jewelry. I sound like a nagging wife...or my husband might tell you that I do...and so be it. I'll soon hop off my soap box, but turn the tables for a moment...say you had a business and customers walked right past your "we are no longer taking orders" sign or the sign that read "due to the fire in the warehouse, all orders are backordered by one week" and came in asking "I need stuff...", "where's my stuff?...". It's frustrating. Let's work together, read all the "signs" necessary and be off to a good start before you order! PLEASE NOTE: Custom pieces, bird nests and hand stamped pieces will each vary in their final appearance. Since I create each piece individually, expect these variations in your piece. They are not "engraved" items but hand stamped, so variations will occur. Letters will NOT line up exactly, as a machine does not do the stamping, I do;) Each purchase is packaged in signature E. Ria Designs packaging, appropriate for storage or gift-giving.

Payment must be made at time of checkout via PayPal. SHIPPING POLICY - I ship via USPS first class mail. I AM NOW SHIPPING INTERNATIONAL. To almost all countries, the cost is not much more than in the U.S., so I don't charge extra. Refunds and Exchanges

HAND CRAFTED QUALITY - The unique characteristics of handmade jewelry give it charm. E. Ria Designs pieces are intended to display that charm. I do not intend for my jewelry to look "mass produced" or "factory manufacturered". So...variations in one to piece to another will be present. Variations from one earring to the other in a set will be present. The nest pendant/necklaces, by nature (no pun intended), will each be unique, with variations in "twig" shape, style, placement and look. Although most turn out quite similar, each will have its own characteristics. Please be aware of this when ordering.

Here's a display and comparison of the different chain lengths to help you make the decision:) Note the 14" bead/ball is reserved for children, as even the tiniest of adults have trouble wearing it comfortably. I'll admit, I don't live near the ocean...or a lake...or even a pond for that matter. Do I wish I did? Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no. Even so, I can't get the fun of water out of my designs. Besides birds/eggs/nests, I always flock to sealife. Maybe because of the serenity, maybe because of its beauty, but it's hard to resist a pearl and starfish...don't you agree? Even if you don't, you must appreciate all sealife has to offer...beautiful colors, rich textures and interesting creatures. Enjoy this creation inspired by the sea:)

Doubled-Edged Sword

Why is it when I have the MOST to say, the MOST to share, the MOST to post, I have the LEAST time to do it?! I suppose that is what is called hope - for more time and, well, time. Time is so much...I'm trying to enjoy every moment of the 'process' of life.

Right now, amazingly during the busiest of shopping seasons, I've had to temporarily close www.eriadesigns.etsy.com. I know, am I crazy?! No...truly sane actually! The customers have been amazing on Etsy...excited, kind, patient and pleased. I'm making every attempt to keep them that way, so I closed...yes, closed. This close is hopefully temporary for just a few days. I need to catch up! Off-peak sales are easy to keep up with...work daily, ship daily. I know, I make jewelry...people buy it, they give it away, they wear it. Yet who is THEY? Well, through conversations (convos) on Etsy.com, I've come to know where some of my pieces have gone.

*A woman with two children who had a miscarriage of two little twin girls
*A woman who had lost a child in the last year
*A mother who is fighting breast cancer
*A friend who couldn't be at her friend's birthday party across the continent
*A couple who is expecting their baby girl any day now
*A nanny to a couple's children

I was laying next to No. 1 last night in her bed to cuddle her to sleep. I have done this oh so many nights before, but last night was different. I closed my eyes, pretended the house didn't exist, the curtains, the toys, the furniture, everything was gone. It didn't matter because my three most cherished people were all safe, asleep, soundly in our home. I knew they were there, I knew they were safe and that was all that mattered. I took comfort in knowing that all I need in this world is the comfort of family...and yes, friends, too!

Frivolous...NO...Worth Living For

Some might argue, especially during down economic times, that things like jewelry are truly a luxury and not necessary for a happy life. On the contrary! Each day we have hundreds, possibly thousands of choices to make. Those things usually affect two things, our "work" and our "play", yet each can change the course of our day, and ultimately our lives.

When I create jewelry, or anything for that matter, I feel enlivened, enriched, pleased and content. My day is complete. Then, the reactions I receive from my creations are an extension of that joy. I can't imagine a life where frivolity did not creep into the equation. Enjoy life...it's very, very short. Take pleasure is simple things...like the imperfections of a pearl, the glimmer of a crystal or the perfection of a diamond!

Wasn't yesterday MAY?!

I know. I know. That sounds silly? Yesterday May? Yet that's how I feel! As if San Diego weather turned tropical isn't bad enough, the time is flying by. I haven't seen the movie Benjamin Button, but the idea sounds good - get younger as time goes by. Maybe that's why so many of us have children - to feel young again (or maybe to age ourselves a little quicker;)

Nonetheless, I have been pounding away some new designs - literally. They're a bit more segmented into the niche of stamped jewelry. I love them and I hope you do, too, as I continue to explore this medium.

Just as I woke up this morning, I couldn't believe the clock read 5:29. Not again! What's wrong with letting me sleep in, body? I guess jumping into bed with my babies at 7:30 will lead to early mornings! Oh well...early to bed, early to rise, right?

The morning brings me HOPE though...a glimmer of it coming from the newly risen sunrise that spring is going to appear. PLUS, daylight savings time, a national holiday candidate in my opinion, is only a week or so away! Yippy!

Hallmark Phrases Captured in Time

Do you ever realize you use a word, a phrase, a way of saying something every time you're encountered with an opportunity to express yourself? It was some years ago when I was rattling off about something to a woman I knew. She mid-discussion asked me if I knew I used the phrase "I'll tell you what..." often. I said, "no, never realized it" and went on with my story. Later, I couldn't help but think we're defined by things we say, and more so, the way we say it. I caught myself using that phrase frequently after that interaction. So much so, I tried NOT to use that phrase. I guess there was nothing wrong with it, but when this woman had brought it to my attention, I figured it annoyed her. If it annoyed her, then it probably annoyed others! Yet there are things we say all the time that almost define our personality. I know my husband always puts a prefix of words together before expressing his pure enjoyment of something. I think he uses this string of words because he is so endeared that he doesn't care what others think, yet he wants to let you know he doesn't care by using the qualifying prefix. What hallmark defines you? Is it something you would wear around your neck? Think about it...it might just be!

Who's your sweet pea? My sweet peas are my husband and two darling daughters. Yes, it used to be my dog, but times change and people are much better peas than pets...most of the time! I wouldn't have said that several years ago though. Yet I still admire Sam...he is cute and he doesn't talk back.

I was with the youngest of the clan yesterday...all to myself at Lowe's researching goods. We had so much fun, especially since I rarely get alone time with her. Then, coming home to an empty house was strangely sad. I knew no. 1 and hubby were to return eventually, and you would have thought I would have enjoyed the peace and quiet, but I DIDN'T;) The comfort of ritual, familiarity, routine and constant chatter is what makes my peas SWEET! Enjoy...

A Bird of a Different Color

I wonder how long my affection for birds, eggs, and nests will run? It's been going strong for a good three years now. I believe the "mother bird's nest" switch was flipped with the birth of my first daughter. Now with two little girls at home, it's hard to say that the bird affection will fade. Now that I think about it, I once lived on Meadowlark Lane, and maybe that's where the avian affection arrived. Either way, nature's winged friends are here to stay in my designs...ENJOY!

It isn't but a few days after Christmas and my husband and I are quickly rattling off events in anticipation of spring. He's thinking fantasy golf; I'm thinking pinks, greens, sky blues and white. Now we ARE putting the horse before the cart. Heck, it isn't even 2009 yet! With two little ones, I think we're subsconsciously skipping over the anticipation of New Year's Eve. Whew! Where did the time go?

Whoa! It's been a while, hasn't it?! Time's a flyin', but as the Cable Guy says, "git 'er done...", that's just what has been going on. Up until the birth of our second child, my fingers were flying with new designs, new materials and new creations. Then, literally as I went into labor, I packed up some projects and put them aside for the time. Now with the gift-giving season amidst, the silver has emerged! I could call myself a bit hypocritical by making the statement "less is more" as much of my life revolves around paring down, making simple and gettin grid of clutter. Yet this necklace I designed recently makes me say "ahh...". With its collection of pink and red hues, the sterling is set off in such a way that is just enough...flashy enough, yet just enough.

(Lakefront property? I WISH!)

I live in Iowa, and if you pay any attention to the weather around the nation, you would know we've been getting a LOT of horrible weather lately. Actually, we've probably had more nastiness per capita than anywhere else in the US this month. Topping the list is the Parkersburg tornado - an F5! The worst...and it was the worst for so many. Either lives, homes or businesses were lost.

What does this all have to do with me? Well, this last Saturday, when I went to open my bricks & mortar shop (yes, I have lots of e-shops, too!), I found water in the back quadrant. I wasn't concerned. I mopped it up, put a fan on it and awaited customers. Then, about an hour before closing, I mosied (sp?) around one of the areas I don't usually get to unless a customer needs something or whatever. So, there was water saturating the wool rug that was there, and there was more. AHH!!! Here I am, 9 months pregnant, and needing to move large display pieces in an instant. Thankfully I had some help. I lifted the rug up enough to get air moving under it, panicked for a while, then went home. We came back on Sunday to find even MORE water, more sopping wet rugs and furniture that was soaking up the water like a dry sponge.

Many of the wood pieces had soaked up enough water to bulge, warp and begin to mildew - all overnight! Okay, so enough about that. At that moment, with things dripping all around me, my mom and daughter nearly slipping and sliding through the shop and my pregnant belly looking down to seeping water, I decided to close my shop... I hate to say indefinitely - that always sounds so permanent!

La, la, la...I'm not so worried about these things anymore. Baby #2 is quickly on its way. Now if I could only figure out when???

Internet = Mother's Sanity!

Sometimes I downplay the ease and accessibility the Internet gives me...especially being in a rural area with 1.5 children at home. I went to lunch with a friend and her two children the other day. We were so happy to get together because we had to postpone about three times in able find an ideal date. Plus, with baby #2 on its merry little way, I won't be traveling much (or showing myself in public!) for the next week or two. And getting out with a newborn doesn't make much sense either.

SOO.....we attempted to have a peaceful lunch...just the five of us. HA! What was I thinking? Between the two of us, we had a one-year old, a potty-training two-year old and a food-allergic three-year old. BOY OH BOY, did we have our hands full! The lunch was delectable, thankfully, since if it had been anything bland, I would have probably left still hungry!

There had to have been at least a half dozen (probably) unmarried women near us, or at least they did not have chitlins in tow. Anyway, my friend asked one sarcastically as we left, "sure makes you want to have children soon, doesn't it?!" We all laughed and headed out the door.

As I was driving home after a shopping experience between the lunch and departure, I pinpointed my passion for the Internet. Oh, and the items I went looking for in the bricks & mortar were not to be found - even in the super-stores I tried that day! THE INTERNET HELPS MOTHER MAINTAIN THEIR SANITY by allowing necessary and frivolous purchases from practically any establishment any time of day. OH BLISS!

Even shipping costs are negligible now with gas prices. For me to even get to the large town only 15 miles from me costs more to drive there than to have something small shipped to me. Crazy? Maybe. A welcome excuse to shop the net 24/7? Oh you're darn right! NEW Colorful Wood Tile Pendants!

Summer is (unofficially) here and in come color, whimsy and fun!

I'm creating these fun little pendant necklaces using a variety of mediums. All are painted first, then I add several types of embellishments. Each is attached to a ribbon necklace I make. Plus, these can be customized with monogram pendants...brushed silver script letters!

Organization Mission Accomplished!

Whew! After a days worth of taking out, sorting through, throwing out and putting back (w/ only 3 hours of sleep!), I'm well on my way to an organized home. Well, "on my way" is the key phrase there! While I may have only accomplished the organization of one closet, it's a big step. This is my office closet where I keep lots of supplies & important paperwork.

After I got over the fact I was paying for something NEW to get my OLD things in order, I was able to get motivated to clean up! This shelving unit & tubs are worth their weight in gold...maybe even platinum. I even chose the teal tubs instead of the same price/style clear ones because I thought I might be more enticed to keep things in them if they were colored - silly, huh?! Oh well...it seems to be working. I was SO excited to fill these tubs up and have them sit side-by-side like little soldiers on each shelf. Plus, each shelf holds 350 lbs., so I can load them up and STILL be safe!

I'm so sold on these chrome metal wire shelves that I might just install one in each closet in the house...watch out everyone!

NOW MY MIND IS CLEAR TO DO WHAT I LOVE...CREATE...IN PEACE...AT LEAST FOR A MOMENT:)

The Beauty of Simplicity

During the last few weeks (actually since Jan. 1), and most likely for the next few weeks, I'm in N E S T I N G mode!!! Yes, we're expecting little bird #2 into the nest, yet it was months ago that I had a realization of the power of simplicity! I actually am part of a women's creative group that, among other things, strives to bring empowerment to each of us to do something creative. Ironically, my creative project is to not be so creative! Ah - what's that all about?!

Well, as a work-at-home mother, my nest is my most usual surrounding each day. With this as my canvas, I tend to over-create my space...leaving projects temporarily unfinished, boxes of goods to head to the shop, and materials strewn amongst toys, laundry and the mail. No, this isn't a serene, pleasant working environment, so I knew I needed to change something, since with little chitlins running around, my work environment won't be changing much for several years (and gladly so!).

I have had many "tipping points" over the last few months...some coming one after another and some coming timidly, slowly and at a weak moment. This morning was the culmination of my thoughts of yesterday - I need storage units! I have been holding out for some great find at an auction or flea market with tons of character, vintage style and magazine panache. Well...unless I want to pay more than new price, it hasn't happened. Now that I type these words out, I'll probably get my wish here in a few days! Ah, what bliss that would be!

For now, I think I'm headed to Target for a trip to the organization aisle for something practical (and cute let's hope!). I know, I feel as though I shouldn't splurge on something so mundane...you know, with pretty fabric totes to go with it and all, but I need the storage! As my husband would say "A man will spend twice as much on something he uses every day and a woman will spend half as much on something she never uses."

So...I'm off to spend probably twice as much as I would like, but I'll probably use it everyday!

Two of my FAVORITE pieces to create are my sterling silver bird nests and the stamped word jewelry. I've combined these two for a very special piece - the TWEET pendant/necklace. I think the contrast of the blue freshwater pearl makes the sterling silver shine even more! Don't you?! For some larger discs, I will be creating with the nests and adding these phrases:

Sweet Little Starfish

So I dug into my new shipment of crystal stafish the other day...plus other stafish treasures. Although landlocked here in Iowa, I still dream of a beach full of sea treasures when the temperatures rise. Another beautiful day here - and I am FULL of energy (probably from 10 hours of sleep!).

I'm crazy about blues, greens, grays and whites right now. Then, as I was thinking of these colors when I was creating some new pieces, I realized they NEVER go out of style in a sea motif, in the summer or when paired with one another. Ahh... So my pieces can live in without the changing tides of fashion and fads.

Well...here we go. I put together these three versionso of starfish pendant/necklaces and I must say, I kind of like them! There's always something I would have done differently, but such is the plight of an artist. I was discussing this conundrum with my friend, Ngaire, just yesterday. Artists are never satisfied, and maybe that's okay...they keep on creating!

Clean House = Creative Paralysis

I have such a dichotomy of thought when my house is clean! (It is right now, by the way!) When it's not clean (or in "museum" quality, which we joke about around here...), I feel like I can create/do/manage SO much more if things were just picked up a little more. Well, now that I'm there, or at least nearly there, I am SO wrong. Now that our home is the museum, it's too pretty to touch, or for any creative person, mess up!

Plus, I JUST received via mail today my shipment of new sterling supplies, which I wanted to get to work on. I left my tools and beads at the shop, so it's drooling over little bits of metal for another day or so. Oh well, I need to let the juices puddle up before I began snipping & whacking away at unforgiving sterling silver. Once marred, marred for eternity - or until it gets melted down again!

Ho, hum, onto creating the drape to cover my cubby hole unit in my office. I put off the project since I was battling with my featherweight Singer sewing machine. Turns out I didn't have the bobbin thread correctly the day I planned to finish this drape project. Now that my patience are back, the house is clean and I'm miles away from my beads, I'll get to work on it. The fabric is out of the ordinary, with a slight sheen, looks woven, yet is wrinkle resistant and the most heavenly shades of blue with a touch of platinum.

It must be serendipity, too, since rummaging through the closet for a heavy hammer I stumbled into the nickel hardware I was looking for to secure the rod for this drape over the cubbies. Serendipity indeed! Now to the sewing machine...stay tuned!

In Search of Treasures...

Sometimes sitting down to my computer to search for new treasures ends up depleting my energy, my time and my bank account! Today was such a day... I thought it was time to restock my supplies with findings, beads, pendants and more. Oh, and I did!

A new item I can't WAIT to receive is the Swarovski crystal starfish. I have seen it in others work and I must say, it's stunning!!! The starfish has faceted edges, just like all other crystals, yet it is more organic in shape.

I also found some stunning colors in freshwater pearls...wasabi, orange, oh, so bright and cheery! I can't wait to share with you what I create...
